A rare model, in its oak carrying case.
A beautiful scientific instrumentthat uses the expansion of a hair to determinethe ambient humidity. These variations can be read on a semicircularsilver scale, based on the principle of the hair hygrometer developed byHorace-Bénédict de Saussure. In 1783, this Genevan scholar published his *Essays on Hygrometry*, which included, in particular, a description of a new comparable hygrometer.
The instrument presented here stands out for its beautiful Empire-style design, featuring brass uprights, a silvered dial, a central hand, and a remarkable decorative openwork star.
To this beautiful instrument, Bianchi—a merchant and manufacturer of luxury scientific instruments based on Rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré in Paris, who was also active in Toulouse, added a mercury thermometer to visually balance it.
In good overall condition, with minimal wear consistent with its age and use.
The hair spring is missing, as is likely a small counterweight. The mercury thermometer is present, but its stem is broken.
The oak carrying case is preserved, which adds to the interest and rarity of the set.
