Anarchist Drawing Dated 1893 – “long Live Anarchy, Down Property Owners!” 19th Century Charcoal

Important early charcoal/black chalk drawing on paper, dated November 18, 1893.
The sheet depicts, frontally, a commoner wearing a long coat and a cap, standing out against a wall inscribed with the words: "LONG LIVE ANARCHY – DOWN WITH LANDLORDS!"
The subject matter is situated within the context of the French anarchist and social movements of the late 19th century.
The handwritten date 11/18/93 is consistent with this period of intense anarchist activity and with the anti-property movements that were developing at the time, particularly among the "anti-landlords." The drawing is of high quality: the clothing is modeled with great detail, there is extensive hatching, the figure is well-constructed, and the face is expressively rendered.
