Gorham Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Overlay Glass Perfume Bottles, C.1900

An elegant pair of antique American Art Nouveau perfume bottles made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island, around 1900. Distinguished by their contrasting glass colours and finely executed sterling silver overlay, the pair reflects the high standards of design and craftsmanship achieved by Gorham during the company's golden age.

Each bottle is hand-blown with a matching globular form and retains its original ground-glass ball stopper. One is produced in a rich emerald green, while the companion example is executed in clear crystal. Their elaborate silver overlay is composed of flowing foliage and sinuous organic lines inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, giving the bottles both decorative beauty and practical function.

Established in 1831, Gorham became one of the foremost American manufacturers of sterling silver, supplying luxury wares to both domestic and international markets. Its silver overlay glass pieces required considerable technical skill and remain among the firm's most desirable decorative productions.

The clear crystal bottle retains its original blank silver cartouche, left unengraved throughout its life and offering the possibility of a future personalised monogram if desired.  The silver overlay is stamped in relief "D906", most likely pattern reference.

Both original ground-glass ball stoppers fit correctly and retain their matching sterling silver overlays.

Condition:

Both perfume bottles remain in excellent antique condition. The green bottle is free from damage. The clear bottle has cracks in the glass at the neck; please see the photographs. They have been carefully glued and are barely visible beneath the silver overlay.
