Daum Nancy – Miniature Vase Decorated With A Seascape Featuring Sailboats At Sunset
Small Daum Nancy glass vase, oval in shape but flattened, decorated with a finely detailed seascape.
Several sailboats glide across calm waters beneath an intense sunset in shades of red and orange, while other vessels fade into the horizon. The vase’s compact form serves as a true miniature canvas, allowing Daum’s artists to create a complete panoramic scene through the layering of glass, acid etching, and hand-painted enamel.
Landscape designs played a significant role in Daum’s production around 1900. Rather than reproducing nature in a strictly realistic manner, the artists exploited variations in light, mist, sunsets, and seasonal atmospheres to create poetic effects in the glass. These experimental techniques helped establish Daum as one of the leading manufacturers associated with the École de Nancy and French Art Nouveau.
Signed “Daum Nancy” with the Cross of Lorraine and marked “France.”
