Paul Madeline was a French Post-Impressionist painter, born on October 7, 1863, in Paris and died in the same city on February 12, 1920. He is best known for his luminous landscapes, particularly those of the Creuse region, which established him as one of the leading figures of the Crozant School. 
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he worked at a publishing house to support himself, while painting in his spare time. In 1894, his encounter with the artists Maurice Rollinat and Léon Detroy introduced him to the landscapes of the Creuse region. Captivated by this region, he visited it regularly and produced a large part of his body of work there. 
Paul Madeline exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received an honorable mention in 1897, followed by another distinction at the 1900 World’s Fair. Beginning in 1902, the success of his paintings allowed him to make a living exclusively from his art. He later became a member of the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d’Automne. In 1908, he helped found La Société Moderne, a group bringing together several painters of his time.
His style is influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, particularly by Armand Guillaumin. He focuses on rural landscapes, valleys, rivers, villages, and the French coastline, rendered with a vivid palette and a loose brushstroke that highlights the effects of light and the changing seasons. In the 1910s, he also traveled to Brittany and the Midi. 
Today, his works are housed in several French museums, notably the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, the George-Sand Museum in La Châtre, and various public collections. His landscapes of the Creuse region remain the most sought-after and representative of his body of work.
