Gabriel BELOT, born in 1882 in Paris, was a great artist who was unjustly forgotten for a long time
Recognized by his peers as one of the greatest wood engravers of his generation, he was also a master draftsman and a passionate painter
A biographical book has just been published by Professor of Art History Mr. Stefan ALBL and his wife (available at the Galerie Guardia in Le Castellet for 35 euros. The gallery specializes in this artist’s paintings)
In it, he clearly explains that Belot, born into a very poor family, had an unhappy childhood
His grandfather, a bookbinder, recognized his talent for drawing at an early age and introduced him to wood engraving
Gabriel Belot received many commissions for illustrations, but his deepest desire was to learn to paint
As soon as he had the chance, he bought paints and received advice from the painters of Montmartre
A great career lay ahead of him; he taught in Paris until around the 1930s, at which point, he would leave it all behind to settle in Provence, more specifically in Méounes-les-Montrieux
Passionate about nature as well, he would set out from morning to night in all kinds of weather, into the countryside to capture on canvas the marvelous colors of the countryside and the woods
He passed away in 1962 at his home, “Le Rouge Gorge”
A street in Dijon bears his name
A remarkable biography has been written about this extraordinary artist and will be given to the purchaser of the painting
A certificate of authenticity will accompany the painting
