FurnitureSouyeux (attributed to) : “Exceptional Art Deco sideboard,” veneered with Macassar ebony on the exterior and sycamore on the interior.
92 x 299 x 50 (at the frame) or 54 cm (at the handles).
Numerous small veneer losses, especially on the handles and along the edges ofdrawers; the top has a mottled varnish finish and also features a deep scratch; some drawers do not slide smoothly; the doors and drawers have been marked witha felt-tip pen.
Despite its imposing dimensions, this piece does not appear bulky thanks,among other things, to the recessed baseboard and the external drawer units mounted on the already substantial original cabinet—certainly a custom order.
Etablissement Souyeux was a very important cabinetmaking firm in Nay (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) that, for decades, employed a very large number of workers and, during the interwar period, specialized in Neo-Basque furniture and Art Deco pieces of the highest quality, exotic wood veneers, which they exported worldwide.
