Important bronze sculpture of "Sarpedon" , son of Zeus and Europa , by the sculptor Henri Peinte (1845-1912) . 
Sarpedon , the Lycian hero who fought in the Trojan War against the Achaeans , is depicted here drawing his bow with a quiver and arrows at his feet .
The sculptor's signature "H.PEINTE" , is incised on the richly ornamented , naturalistic base . 
The foundry mark "SIOT-DECAUVILLE FONDEUR" , is circular and on the back of the sculpture . 
The bronze is titled "SARPEDON" on the front of the base . 
This is an old sculpture , dating from the second half of the 19th century . 
Perfect condition with a beautiful patina .

Henri Emmanuel Peinte (1845-1912)

Henri Peinte was a French sculptor , famous for his mythological subjects in the 19th century , born on July 24 , 1845 , in Cambrai. 

The son of François Emmanuel Joseph Peinte , an architect in Cambrai , Henri Peinte pursued artistic studies . 
He began his apprenticeship at the Cambrai School of Drawing . 
Subsequently , he received a scholarship from the department and entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris .
There , he was trained by the sculptors Francisque Duret , Eugene Guillaume , and Jules Cavelier . 

He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1877 and won a "Third Class Medal" with his statue of "Sarpedon" ,his best-known work .
He received an award for a bronze reduction of his "Sarpedon" and the group "Orpheus and Cerberus" , at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 , the same year he was awarded the "Legion of Honour" . 
The original plaster model of "Sarpedon" is currently held at the Museum of Fine - Arts in Coulommiers .

Henri Emmanuel Peinte died on December 26 , 1912 , in Paris .
