Diane In The Bath Natural Biscuit Group, Nymph & Greyhound, 19th Century, 18th-century Style, By Louis-simon Boizot

Artist: D'apres Louis Simon Boizot

A rare and important 19th-century porcelain biscuit group depicting Diana Bathing, modeled after a design by Louis-Simon Boizot (1743–1809), one of the great French Neoclassical sculptors and director of the sculpture workshop at the Royal Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory.

The goddess of the hunt is depicted in an intimate moment, surrounded by three nymphs who are tending to her after the hunt.
One is washing her foot with a sponge, another is gently holding back her drapery, while a third, carrying her quiver, stands by her side.
A greyhound, Diana’s faithful companion, stands affectionately against the goddess, bringing movement and balance to this composition. The entire piece rests on a finely modeled rocky base.

Inspired by the classical aesthetic so dear to Louis-Simon Boizot, this group captivates with the harmony of its composition, the softness of the faces, the quality of the anatomical modeling, and the remarkable finesse of the drapery. The matte whiteness of the bisque highlights the play of light and emphasizes the richness of the sculpted decoration. Entirely carved in the round, it offers decorative appeal from every angle.

The reverse side of the base bears several incised marks.

In good overall condition. Note two small chips on the fingers, visible in the detailed photographs.

36 cm tall.

This model, directly inspired by a creation by Louis-Simon Boizot, attests to the enduring popularity of the Neoclassical style throughout the 19th century.
