A lovely, vintage oil-on-canvas painting by Gaston Thiery depicting the banks of the Creuse River at the confluence of the two Creuse rivers in Fresselines, circa 1950–1960, signed in red in the lower right corner.
Dimensions of the painting alone, unframed: 33x41cm
The painting is in good original condition, with only two or three very slight touch-ups; it is delivered in its period frame with a gray patina.
Authenticity guaranteed
This is a lovely and fairly rare early Post-Impressionist composition by Gaston Thiery, likely from the period when he was still working alongside his mentor, Léon Detroy. Here he paints the Creuse at its confluence, where the Petite Creuse and the Creuse rivers meet. His brushwork is clearly typical of this period; he was still using a palette knife at the time, and his color palette is vibrant and colorful—very different from the one he would use later.
Born in Lille and a student of Léon Detroy, Gaston Thiéry is one of the last representatives of the Crozant school.
He settled in Fresselines, Creuse, where he set up his studio, and began working in tapestry in 1965 with the Andraud workshop in Aubusson.
There are several publications on Thiéry, including a catalogue raisonné.
He is internationally renowned, having exhibited extensively in Japan during his lifetime, as well as in Paris and throughout France.
As Léon Detroy’s last student, Gaston THIERY stated in 1992:
“In 1940, the Creuse Valley took me in. I embraced it in all its fullness, aware of the responsibility that fell to me to ensure the continuity of the Crozant school. Times change, but my passion hasremained intact—indeed, it has been rekindled by the enthusiasm and sincerityof those who have joined me... And I want to state emphatically that plein air painting is not dead... In painting, as in everything else, thewheel turns; landscape painting has its followers and is thriving. So, to you, the young followers and disciples who have stepped into the footsteps of the painters of the Creuse Valley—Jean-Marie Laberthonnière, Jean Claude Resche, Pierre Noailhac, René Esposito, Ivan Commaincas..."
