An 18th-century alabaster sculpture of a lion on a marble base. Tuscany.
Works such as these enjoyed enormous commercial success in the 18th century. They were purchased as collectibles by noble travelers from all over Europe during the Grand Tour of Italy. This particular piece depicts a lion in a sleeping position, with a thick, sculpted mane and a marble base. The front legs are missing.
