A striking table lamp depicting a tridacna-style seashell, composed of two large valves made of molded pearlescent methacrylate, whose deeply sculpted ridges realistically reproduce the natural contours of the shell.

At the center of the composition sits a hemispherical opal acrylic diffuser, concealing the light source. The entire piece rests on a quadrangular base made of black-lacquered metal, accented by a brass plinth.

The methacrylate exhibits a subtle iridescence reminiscent of the reflections found in natural mother-of-pearl, lending the piece a remarkable quality of light.

Analysis and commentary:

During the 1970s, Liane ROUGIER developed, for MAISON ROUGIER, a series of light fixtures that became emblematic of the organic design of that decade. Her work is characterized by the innovative use of pearlescent methacrylate—also marketed under the names Perspex or Plexiglas—a material whose optical qualities allow it to reproduce the shifting effects of mother-of-pearl while offering great freedom in shaping.

This lamp belongs to the famous “Coquillage” series, likely MAISON ROUGIER’s most iconic creation. Inspired by the giant clam (Tridacna gigas), it translates a natural form into a resolutely sculptural language, where light becomes an integral part of the work. The central diffuser evokes the pearl nestled at the heart of the shell, while the two valves capture and diffuse the light thanks to their delicate pearlescent effects.

The piece is fully in keeping with the Hollywood Regency aesthetic, a decorative style that reached its peak in the 1970s and emphasizes luxurious materials, spectacular forms, and references to the mineral or marine world. Straddling the line between lighting and sculpture, this creation far transcends its utilitarian function to become a true decorative object.
