Chinese panel: red silk decorated with a landscape featuring a vast imperial palace or pavilion set within a traditional landscape, rendered in very fine and delicate straw marquetry.
This object from the late Qing period (1644–1912) can be dated to the period between 1850 and 1900.
At the top of the landscape is a Chinese inscription that translates to: “Ruì Xiang Màn Tang,” which can be rendered as: “May the auspicious fragrance permeate the entire home,” or “Happiness and fragrance fill the house.”
This good-luck phrase was frequently used in the decoration of wealthy Chinese homes.
It was intended to protect the home.
This silk piece is backed by a wooden panel reinforced with crossbars. One crossbar appears to be missing, but this does not affect its structural integrity.
It has one or two small water stains, a small area where the straw backing is missing on the left side, and a small area where the fabric has come away from the backing along the lower left edge.
There is a small hole on the right side, which is not a major issue for such an old object that has traveled (additional photos available upon request).
This red silk has retained its beautiful bright red color.
It is presented in a superb carved wooden frame featuring black and gold Chinese motifs on a red lacquered background that echoes the color of the silk.
