"goroga" Monkey Mask, Gouro People, Ivory Coast

A mask depicting an ape-like face within an oval. The domed forehead is marked by a central ridge that runs in a straight line from the nose through the philtrum to the mouth. The eyes are set in deep sockets, which intensifies the gaze. Note that the eye sockets are not pierced (the left eye is missing) and that the wearer could see through the mouth. Scarification patterns adorn the upper cheeks. The mouth is slightly parted, almost smiling, revealing rows of teeth. The holes, the remnants of spikes, and a different patina on the top and around the edges of the mask suggest that these areas were originally covered with animal skin.
This mask, called “Goroga,” was used by the secret society “Je.”
