Pietercelie Alfred (1878–1995)

*Alfred Pietercelie was a renowned Belgian artist born in Antwerp in 1879 and who died in Jette, Brussels, in 1995. A painter and decorator, he studied at the academies in Antwerp, Brussels, and Anderlecht (1893–1900). He exhibited for the first time in 1917 with the group L’Œuvre Nouvelle.

His work is characterized by a pursuit of “essential” design, often evoking a sense of peace, harmony, and emotion. He specialized in landscapes of the Brussels countryside, the Ourthe Valley, and the south of France, the latter inspiring a sunnier and more vibrant color palette. He was also a renowned painter of flowers and still lifes. Having settled in Jette in 1936, he founded the Cercle de Jette in 1938, serving as its president until his death. He is extensively mentioned in the *Biographie nationale* of the Royal Academy of Belgium, Volume XXXVII. He is also mentioned in *BAS I* and *Deux siècles de signatures d'artistes belges*.
