The expansive landscape frames a view of a plain rich in vegetation at the foot of rocky hills; a river flows through it, featuring waterfalls but still navigable.
On the left is a path descending from the arched passageway between two buildings on the hill behind; two men in Eastern attire are walking along it, carrying a huge branch bearing berries on a pole. This scene evokes the biblical episode in which two spies sent by Moses to the land of Canaan cut down a cluster of grapes so large and heavy that it had to be carried on a pole resting on their shoulders. This exceptional fruit became a symbol of the abundance of the “Promised Land” (Numbers 13:23).
The scene is depicted at sunset, with the pink hues of the sky radiating over the mountain peaks.
The painting has been restored and re-painted in the past.
It is presented in an early 20th-century gilded frame.
