Portrait Of A Young Woman Wearing A Hat, Ca. 1905, Oil On Canvas By Jean Crotti
Artist: Jean-joseph Crotti, Bulle 1878- Neuilly Sur Seine 1858
Jean Crotti was a Swiss-born painter and lithographer who became a naturalized French citizen in 1927. Through his marriage to Suzanne Duchamp in 1919, he was the brother-in-law of Jacques Villon, Marcel Duchamp, and Raymond Duchamp-Villon.
He moved to Paris in 1902 and set up a small studio on Rue Pierre-Fontaine.
The work is signed in the lower right corner, likely around 1905; it is therefore possible that this portrait depicts Yvonne Chastel, his first wife, whom he divorced to marry Suzanne Duchamp.
