Empire Style Inkwell In A Basket-shaped Form, Gilded Bronze (ormolu), Early 19th Century
A beautiful French inkwell from the First Empire period, shaped like a small ship, dating from the early 19th century.
The inkwell depicts two dolphins with twisted tails supporting a shell, inside which are hidden the inkwell’s two compartments, each closed by finely chiseled lids. The entire piece rests on a base made of Aleppo breccia marble.
This inkwell is one of those prestigious objects produced during the Empire period to decorate luxurious interiors: they adorned the desks of prominent figures and were crafted, depending on social status, from the finest materials. The base made of Aleppo breccia—a fine and extremely expensive marble—and the excellent quality of the gilding and chiseling confirm that it originated from a setting at the very top of the social hierarchy.
Excellent condition, with original mercury gilding.
