Neoclassical Louis XVI-style parlor lamp in silver-plated bronze. French work from the second half of the 19th century.
This parlor lamp consists of a substantial three-armed candelabra in silver-plated bronze, crafted in the Louis XVI style. Its decoration consistently reflects the neoclassical ornamental vocabulary inspired by antiquity, which was widely revived in the French decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century.
The candelabra rests on a tripod ending in three goat’s-foot feet, whose meticulous modeling attests to the quality of the craftsmanship. The curved, hollowed-out, and fluted uprights are connected by elegant garlands of suspended laurel leaves, which lend lightness and movement to the composition.
The three light arms, square in cross-section and slightly curved, feature particularly elaborate decoration. They are punctuated by rows of waterleaf bases and garlands of relief laurel leaves, and emerge from large, finely modeled acanthus leaves. The lampshades feature a design of large, radiating acanthus leaves surmounted by a crown formed of a twisted band of laurel leaves, while the side arms combine a ribbon-wrapped twisted band, fluting, and a frieze of laurel leaves.
The circular base, punctuated by several steps and moldings, is dominated by a wide fluted torus largely covered with powerful clusters of acanthus leaves alternating with elegant cascading sheaves of wheat. A band decorated with alternating rosettes and geometric motifs provides the transition to the tripod. The ensemble forms a particularly harmonious design in which acanthus leaves, laurel, sheaves of wheat, and goat’s feet—all emblematic motifs of the Neoclassical repertoire—complement one another. The sheaves of wheat, a symbol of abundance, also evoke the sensibility toward an idealized nature that characterized the decorative arts of the late 18th century.
A close examination of the piece reveals the high quality of the cast iron and the chiseling. The reliefs are well-defined, the various decorative registers are carefully arranged in a hierarchy, and the delicately matte-finished backgrounds highlight the polished sections.
