A pencil drawing of two nude women standing around an ancient fountain. Probably based on a vase design. The drawing bears an inscription in the lower left corner and is signed “n. dufresne” in the lower right corner.
Michel Nitot, known as Charles Dufresne, was born in 1759 in Chezy l’Abbaye. A draftsman and engraver, as well as an opera singer, he is known for his precise, classical-inspired drawings reminiscent of those by Flaxman; a collection of these entered the Musée des Arts Décoratifs through a bequest by Jules Maciet in 1904. He died in Paris in 1805.
The drawing is mounted in a blackened Second Empire-style wooden and stucco frame. Without the frame, the drawing measures 14 x 10.5 cm.
An article published by the Société d’Histoire de l’Art Français in 1950 is dedicated to him.
