Instrument for verifying the alcohol content of beverages for commercial transactions and tax collection.
The hydrometer, made of gilded brass, comes with nine weights marked in increments of 10, from 10 to 90. These are notched discs that can be placed above the lower bulb of the instrument, thereby altering its weight and thus its equilibrium position when submerged.
The thermometer is graduated in degrees Fahrenheit from 2 to 120.
Wooden case with marquetry trim and a cartouche marked “SIKES’S HYDROMETER – J; WHITE OPTICIAN GLASGOW.” The interior is lined with red velvet.
