This remarkable Aubusson tapestry, woven in wool and silk in the second half of the 17th century, is based on a design attributed to Vigon. It belongs to the great tradition of the French royal workshops, renowned for the fineness of their weaving, the richness of their colors, and the quality of their compositions inspired by ancient mythology.

The scene depicts the coronation of Melinte and Ariadne, in a solemn setting where sovereigns, heroes, deities, and winged cupids mingle. However, this composition is also interpreted as an evocation of the marriage of Venus and Vulcan, a mythological theme particularly popular in the 17th century. The majestic golden chariot, forged by Vulcan, advances at the heart of a procession composed of deities and cupids celebrating this union.

In the foreground are several richly dressed figures, including crowned sovereigns, advisors, and warriors. On the right, an elegant chariot drawn by two horses carries a princely couple, a symbol of union and triumph. Winged cupids accompany the procession, reinforcing the allegorical dimension of the scene.

On the left appears Mars, recognizable by his helmet and his horse; his presence, combined with the small dog depicted in the foreground, constitutes a subtle allusion to Venus’s future infidelity. This contrast between official marriage and romantic passion lends the work a moral and symbolic interpretation, characteristic of mythological depictions from the Grand Siècle.

The setting unfolds in a wooded landscape dotted with ancient architecture, statues, and lush vegetation, creating a theatrical depth typical of the great Aubusson tapestries. The color palette, dominated by shades of blue, gray, and ivory and enhanced with silk threads, lends luminosity and refinement to the composition.
