A magnificent, large wooden headdress featuring the ochre patina characteristic of Nigeria’s Mama ethnic group
Mama headdresses, shaped like stylized animal heads, symbolize the spirits of the bush; the dancers who wear these headdresses are dressed in costumes made of plant fibers and are tasked with winning the favor of the ancestral spirits (who have become bush spirits) during harvest festivals
The circular section, or flared bowl, is made of wickerwork and coiled braided ropes.
The lower part is made of carved wood
