Fetish, Yaka People, Drc
A statue depicting a standing female figure. Her arms hang at her sides, while her hands rest on her navel. Her genitals are visible, and her legs are slightly bent. The neck is long and supports a head in which the sculptor has included a great deal of detail: a slightly parted mouth, a flat nose, scarification marks on the cheeks, well-defined ears, a traditional headdress, and deep-set, coffee-bean-shaped eyes.
The magical charm is placed on the torso and is covered by a glass plate—which is unusual among the Yaka people. Wood with a beautiful patina from heavy use (slight damage at the feet), traces of kaolin, glass (cracked).
