Madonna and Child
Italian School, late 17th century – early 18th century
Oil on canvas mounted on panel, presented in its original carved and gilded wooden frame.
Very good condition
Frame 30x35 cm
This depiction of the Virgin and Child belongs to the tradition of private devotional painting developed in Italian workshops in the late 17th century. The Virgin, dressed in a blue cloak over a red gown, holds the Infant Jesus, who blesses the viewer with his right hand. Both figures are surrounded by a radiant halo rendered in gold paint.
The artist favors a vision imbued with gentleness and tenderness. The faces with their delicate features, the skin tones, and the drapery are characteristic of the Italian Baroque tradition. The composition focuses all attention on the silent dialogue between the Mother and the Child.
A work of intimate piety, decorative and refined, representative of late 17th-century Italian art.
