Large Modernist Terracotta Sculpture – Female Figure – Circa 1955–1975
A large, patinated terracotta sculpture depicting a reclining female figure with her arms raised above her head. The work captivates with the power of its expression and its highly personal visual language. The face, deliberately stylized, features incised eyes, a geometric nose, and a wide-open mouth. The grid-like hairstyle, along with the numerous perforations scattered across the ears, nose, lips, abdomen, and thighs, play a key role in defining the character of this creation. The powerful, simplified modeling of the hands, as well as the generous volumes of the body, attest to the sculptor’s true craftsmanship. This work is part of the European modernist sculpture movement of the 1950s–1970s, strongly inspired by primitive arts, though it does not fall within the realm of traditional ethnographic production. Hollow, thick-walled terracotta with a beautiful original dark brown patina. No visible signature or mark. In very good condition, with an original patina and slight signs of wear consistent with its age. Dimensions Length: 56 cm Height: 36 cm Width: approximately 10 cm Weight: approximately 7 kg A decorative sculpture with a commanding presence, ideal for a collection of art ceramics or 20th-century modernist sculpture.
