Pyrenees, 16th Century Or Earlier : "incredible Solid-wood Gothic Chest"
Pyrenees, 16th century or earlier: “Incredible single-piece Gothic chest,” made of fir wood, 49 × 108 × 46 cm, with wrought-iron hinges.
This chest, carved from a single log, has undergone numerous restorations of varying success throughout its long history : the lid bearing thecount’s coat of arms and the hinges were redone in the early 20th century, and there are numerous repairs, along with a later engraving of gardening tools.
Of Navarrese origin, but may have been made on this side of thePyrenees.
This extremely rare example of a monoxyl construction—the first I’ve encountered in forty years—makes it a museum-quality piece.
