The scene captures the climax of the biblical story. Potiphar's wife, sitting half-naked on the bed, attempts to restrain Joseph by grabbing his cloak, while the young man, faithful to his master and determined not to give in to temptation, leaves the room. The robe left in the woman's hands will soon become the false evidence with which she accuses him of having raped her, leading to his unjust imprisonment.

The painter concentrates the entire narrative tension in the drape contested between the protagonists. The female figure, wrapped in ample golden-yellow drapery, emerges with pale skin before the deep red curtain, while Joseph, elegantly attired in a splendid blue robe, appears already intent on fleeing. At the center of the composition appears a beautiful little dog, a significant detail that can be interpreted as a symbol of loyalty: that maintained by Joseph towards his master and, by contrast, that broken by Potiphar's wife.

The work displays characteristics attributable to the French pictorial culture of the second half of the 17th century.
