The scene captures theclimax of the biblical story. Potiphar's wife, sitting half-naked onthe bed, attempts to restrain Joseph by grabbing his cloak, while theyoung man, faithful to his master and determined not to give in totemptation, leaves the room. The robe left in the woman's hands willsoon become the false evidence with which she accuses him of havingraped her, leading to his unjust imprisonment.

The painter concentratesthe entire narrative tension in the drape contested between theprotagonists. The female figure, wrapped in ample golden-yellowdrapery, emerges with pale skin before the deep red curtain, whileJoseph, elegantly attired in a splendid blue robe, appears alreadyintent on fleeing. At the center of the composition appears abeautiful little dog, a significant detail that can be interpreted asa symbol of loyalty: that maintained by Joseph towards his masterand, by contrast, that broken by Potiphar's wife.
