Miniature Samurai Armour with Its Lacquer Storage Box

Rare Japanese miniature samurai armour displayed on its original internal support structure, professionally consolidated for stability, and mounted on an elegant contemporary metal display stand. The armour is accompanied by its original black lacquered wooden storage box.

The piece is attributed to the Meiji period (1868–1912), in accordance with its auction documentation. It is a finely executed reduced-scale representation of a traditional Japanese suit of armour, faithfully reproducing its principal components.

The armour comprises a kabuto helmet with shikoro neck guard, menpō face mask, dō cuirass, sode shoulder guards, kote arm defences, haidate thigh protectors and suneate shin guards, assembled with traditional odoshi lacing.

The Meiji era witnessed the gradual disappearance of the samurai class following the political and social reforms initiated in 1868. Nevertheless, Japanese armourers continued to preserve centuries of craftsmanship by producing ceremonial armours, miniature examples and presentation pieces celebrating Japan’s martial heritage.

This example illustrates that enduring tradition through the quality of its lacquer work, metal fittings, lamellar construction and refined overall execution. Minor historic restorations, particularly to some sections of the lacing, appear consistent with the long conservation history of the piece and do not diminish either its integrity or its appeal.

The survival of its original lacquer storage box considerably enhances the rarity and desirability of the ensemble.

Displayed on its consolidated internal support and elegant contemporary metal stand, this miniature armour is both an impressive decorative object and an evocative testimony to the artistry of Japanese armourers at the end of the nineteenth century.

Combining refined craftsmanship, its original lacquer storage box and an elegant presentation, this miniature armour represents a fine example of late Meiji Japanese armour-making. It would make a distinguished addition to any collection devoted to Japanese art or Asian arms and armour.
