A beautiful 19th-century Belgian watercolor attributed to Alfred Hubert (Liège 1830 – Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Brussels 1902), titled “The Coal Merchant.”

The scene depicts a coal merchant traveling along a country road with three horses. The work stands out for its masterful draftsmanship, particularly in the movement of the horses, as well as for the soft, luminous atmosphere characteristic of watercolor.

The work bears the monogram “AH” in the lower right corner. The frame also features a small plaque reading “A. Hubert – The Coal Merchant.”

On the back, an old label reads “Exposition Historique De L’Art Belge”, with the subject of the work listed as “Le Marchand De Charbon” and the artist’s name as “Hubert Alfred.” This old label adds significant historical and provenance interest.
