Pair Of 19th-century Photographs Of The Bay Of Naples, By The Giorgio Sommer Studios
Giorgio Sommer (1834–1914), born in Frankfurt, settled in Naples in 1857 and established a studio there. His extensive body of work spanned all of Italy and allowed the already numerous tourists to bring home magnificent, ready-made photo albums from their travels.
At the same time, he opened a bronze foundry to reproduce the wonders discovered in Pompeii. His work would become renowned for its high quality.
Here, then, are two panoramic views of the Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius, of course, in the background.
Still very sharp and free of sun damage (just a slight indentation in the sky of one print), they bear Sommer’s drystamp and are presented in attractive mid-19th-century rosewood frames with key mounts.
