Pair Of Hardstone Cameos Set As Brooches, 19th Century
A rare pair of three-layer hardstone (agate or carnelian) cameo brooches set in 18-karat gold (owl hallmark) from the 19th century.
The cameos depict two side-by-side busts in profile: Alexander the Great and his mother, Olympia.
They are carved from a multi-layered stone, requiring great skill on the part of the sculptor to bring out the stone’s various colors.
Thus, Olympia’s profile is carved from a white layer and Alexander the Great’s from a brown layer.
The cameos are in very good condition and measure 3 x 2 cm.
