19th-century French School, portrait of a young boy. This is a pastel, executed with great elegance. The young man, about 12 years old, is handsome, well-groomed, and has very expressive brown eyes. It is the work of a skilled portrait artist who depicted a real person with his own character, striving for a true likeness rather than a “sketch-like portrait” representing a decorative silhouette. The portrait is unsigned and is presented in an oval-shaped wooden frame gilded with gold leaf. Napoleon III period, circa 1860.
