Very good overall condition
Under a stormy sky, amid rocks and undergrowth, the drama of the farmyard unfolds in a frozen moment. A red-coated predator—dog, wolf, or fox; its identity remains uncertain—has seized the white hen under its paw, pinning her to the ground. But the rooster, perched above the scene with his wings spread wide and his crest raised, rushes to defend his mate, beak open as he faces the attacker. In the background, another farmyard bird watches the scene unfold against a rolling landscape that opens out toward a bluish horizon.
The composition, focused on the three superimposed animals, plays on the reddish and brown tones of the predator, the luminous white of the hen, and the dark shades of the rooster’s tail, which occupies the entire upper portion of the painting. This scene of a struggle between farmyard birds and a predator is part of an animal-themed tradition that was highly prized in Northern Europe and France during the 17th and 18th centuries—a genre in which the confrontation between the predatory instinct and the protective instinct gave rise to vivid, narrative compositions.

Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. The canvas is original (18th century); the mounting and frame date from the 19th century.
Condition
Good overall condition considering the work’s age. There are some signs of rubbing and old retouching in the background, which are minor and consistent with the age of the canvas.
Frame
Beautiful 19th-century gilded wood frame. Along the outer edge, a repeating pattern of carved leaves runs the entire length, set against a slightly textured background that catches the light. Toward the center, a second, narrower band features a motif of small flowers and foliage, framed by tiny pearls. The two bands are separated by a simple, smooth gilded molding. The gilding is slightly worn in places, with small cracks in the corners—signs of wear that are entirely normal for a frame of this age—but the frame as a whole retains a beautiful luster.
