Louis Caradec (1802–1888)

Painterborn in Brest, a student of CHARRIOUX. He taught drawing at the Société d’Émulation in Brest and then at the city’s high school beginning in 1874. In 1836, he contributed as a lithographer to the illustrations for Jacques Cambry’s “Voyage dans le Finistère" by Jacques Cambry and "Finistère in 1836" by Émile Souvestre. In 1858, he created an album of traditional Breton costumes presented to Napoleon III during his visit to Brittany. He painted numerous Breton landscapes and interior scenes, but above all many portraits in traditional costumes as well as scenes of daily life, markets, and festivals. His works demonstrate high-quality execution, precision in the depiction of costumes and accessories, and the rendering of fabrics. His works are of great interest from an ethnological perspective.
