Artist: Sakuuchi Yamato Japon - (1901 - ?)

Bronze with an antique green patina—some signs of wear. Signed.

Born in 1901 in Nagano. As a young man, he worked as a lumberjack. Noticed for his sculptures, which he created as a hobby, he enrolled in the Japanese Farmers’ Art School in 1930. He exhibited until 1936 at the institute’s dedicated exhibition.
In 1936, he left for France to study at the Académie Julian for three years, then traveled to India to study Buddhist statuary.

-Upon his return to Japan, he learned casting techniques from Naoya Takei (a former student of Bourdelle), a leading figure inmodern sculpture.
Beginning in 1959, he divided his time between Paris and Japan.
This bronze sculpture is similar to a 1972 monument dedicated to an Olympic champion at the Sapporo Winter Games. See the last photo in the slideshow.
