18th-century Infant Jesus, Carved And Polychrome Wooden Sculpture

A large wood sculpture carved in the round depicting the Child Jesus standing, nude, in a pose full of gentleness and naturalness. The face, with its delicate, youthful features, retains its original polychrome paint with subtly rosy skin tones. The hair, rendered in thick, wavy strands, frames the face and extends well beyond the back of the head. The sculpture displays particularly meticulous modeling, evident throughout the entire form. This full-relief execution attests to a work designed to be appreciated independently of any architectural setting. The Infant Jesus was traditionally depicted with raised arms, one of which might suggest a gesture of blessing while the other might hold a symbolic attribute, such as a globe bearing a cross or a cross. The two arms, now missing, were likely attached to the body’s structure. The presence of an old blue halo at the back of the head completes the figure’s sacred iconography.
Condition consistent with its age. The sculpture exhibits ancient losses and damage, particularly on the two arms, as well as wear, scuffing, and gaps in the polychrome paint. The surface features an ancient patina and traces of interventions or restorations throughout its history. The trompe l’oeil green marble base appears to date from a later period than the sculpture itself. The work is offered in its current condition, which contributes to its character and historical context.
