Japanese Maki-e Lacquer Panel Depicting Mount Fuji, Early 20th Century

An elegant Japanese decorative panel, created in the early decades of the 20th century, likely taken from the lid of a box or a small piece of furniture and later mounted in a modern frame.The scene depicts an evocative landscape with Mount Fuji in the background, two dignitaries being carried in a rickshaw, and an attendant in the foreground. The background, in dark red lacquer with delicate, barely perceptible floral motifs, is embellished with elegant maki-e decorations using gold powder. The figures’ faces are rendered with small bone inlays, using a decorative technique typical of Japanese craftsmanship from the late Meiji and early Taishō periods.The panel measures 17 × 17 cm and is presented in a modern gilded wooden frame measuring 42 × 42 cm, which enhances its display. Date: early 20th century (circa 1900–1925).Condition: The panel has a significant crack in the wooden backing, resulting in the lacquer lifting along the crack line, as well as normal wear and minor losses due to age and use.
