Large Antique Gilded And Carved Wooden Frieze, 19th Century
The piece is an antique carved and gilded wooden cornice, decorated in the center with the face of a winged cherub and embellished with leaf-shaped volutes and cascading floral motifs on the sides. This type of ornamental frieze was used as a crowning element (pediment or cornice) for large fireplace mirrors, doorways, headboards, or as a decorative lintel. The richness of detail, the flow of the scrolls, and the inclusion of the cherub are typical elements of the Baroque or Barocchetto style, often echoed and reproduced in Italian and European artisanal workshops of the 18th and 19th centuries. The piece is temporarily resting on an underlying lacquered and profiled frame.
