Pair Of Curved Louis XV Corner Pieces

Pair of curved corner cabinets in the Louis XV style

One dates from the 18th century; the other is a perfect 19th-century replica.

A rare and elegant pair of curved corner cabinets in painted softwood, displaying remarkable uniformity despite having been crafted in two distinct periods. One is an authentic 18th-century corner cabinet, while the second, crafted in the 19th century, faithfully reproduces its proportions, decoration, and aesthetic features to form a true pair.

Each piece features a triangular design with a curved front, intended to fit perfectly into the corner of a room. The fronts open with two molded doors featuring large scalloped panels, framed by projecting moldings highlighted in a reddish-brown hue, which harmoniously contrasts with a patinated olive-green paint finish, featuring soft and authentic tones.

The upper section is crowned by an overhanging molded cornice resting on a frieze carved with a simple geometric pattern, adorned in the center by a circular medallion framed by elongated cartouches, a characteristic feature of provincial furniture from the second half of the 18th century.

The interiors, made entirely of natural wood, offer ample storage space thanks to several fixed shelves that follow the triangular shape of the piece, perfectly suited for displaying works of art, porcelain, or books.

The original locks, hardware, and dowels have been preserved, attesting to the authenticity of the set. The two corner cabinets rest on a black, molded base that elegantly highlights their curved silhouette.

The backs clearly reveal their different periods: the 18th-century corner cabinet features a traditional construction of wide antique planks with original joints and signs of wear consistent with its age, while the second, made in the 19th century, features a more uniform construction while scrupulously adhering to the original design.

The paintwork displays a beautiful antique patina with the expected natural wear and tear, which fully contributes to the decorative charm of this set.

This pair is a fine example of complementary furniture, in which a 19th-century replica was crafted with great attention to detail to recreate a harmonious pair—a common practice in prestigious residences during the 19th century.
