This large painting of Mary, the infant Jesus, and St. John was painted around 1870–1880 by the renowned Austrian portrait, genre, and nude painter Franz Russ II (1844–1906). He was the son of the historical painter Franz Russ Sr. and the brother of Robert Russ. The artist studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Ruben and worked in Vienna and Paris. His romantic paintings of Madonnas and Oriental beauties are highly regarded by European and American collectors.
