Silver-plated Metal Inkwell Marked With A Crowned "c," Louis XV Period
Two inkwells and a table bell in the center, set on a pinched tray with scalloped edges, mounted on four spindle legs.
The inkwell is stamped with a C surmounted by a crown. A decree of 1745 required bronze artisans to mark their works with this distinctive letter. This mark indicated a tax paid on bronze and copper objects from 1745 to 1749. It applied to both objects and pieces of furniture adorned with them. Following the signing of the Peace of Aachen, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession, this tax was abolished along with other minor new taxes that had been introduced during the war. Despite the short duration of this tax, many objects bear this hallmark.
