Artist: Xavier Wurth (1869-1933)

20th-century oil painting on wood panel, signed lower right by Xavier Wurth (1869–1933) and dated 1895 beneath the signature. The reverse bears a detailed artist biography focusing on his exhibitions, along with a bibliography referencing Belgian art books and dictionaries published between 1930 and 1981. The final section mentions the Museum of Walloon Art in Liège, which holds works by the artist, and notes that he received a commission from the Russian Imperial Court.

A peaceful countryside view structured by a rustic wooden fence and framed by shrubs on either side. Beyond, the landscape gently unfolds across rolling hills before dissolving into the distant horizon.

The true subject of the painting is its pearlescent light. Filtering through the open sky, it bathes the fields and distant landscape in a soft glow, lending the scene an almost dreamlike quality and subtly transforming the natural colors.

The painting is executed with varied impasto and confident, expressive brushwork. Energetic strokes climb along the path on the left, creating a gentle rhythm that guides the eye through the composition. Beneath the apparent stillness, the artist conveys the movement of the vegetation, inviting the viewer into the landscape.

The subdued palette enhances this atmosphere. Darker passages within the shrubs harmonize beautifully with the frame, an antique wood and gilt stucco example richly decorated with floral and foliate moldings. Its warm tones provide a fitting visual echo of the landscape while reinforcing the painting's autumnal character.

A luminous work by the artist of whom the Belgian writer and art critic Jules Bosmant (1893–1975) wrote:

"Xavier Wurth is, indeed, perhaps the painter who interpreted with the greatest charm and fidelity the poetry of our Ardennes rivers and streams."

About the artist:

Xavier Wurth (1869–1933) was a Belgian painter born in Liège. Descended from a family originally from Bühl, Germany, later established in Luxembourg and Belgium, he was the son of a surgeon who hoped he would pursue a career in medicine.

Instead, Wurth chose the artistic path, studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Liège between 1889 and 1893 under Adrien de Witte and Émile Berchmans. He graduated with the academy's highest distinctions, earning three medals.

For more than forty years, he exhibited regularly at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts of Liège. His work is devoted primarily to the landscapes of Wallonia, especially the Condroz and Ardennes regions, where he sensitively captured the rivers, valleys, and countryside of his native Belgium.

From 1921 to 1932, he taught drawing at the Academy, helping to train a new generation of Belgian artists. He died in Liège in 1933.
