Oak Armchair By Benjamin Gomez, Basque Regionalist Art Deco, Circa 1920–1930
Artist: Benjamin Gomez
Oak Armchair by Benjamin Gomez, Basque Regionalist Art Deco, circa 1920–1930
An exceptional period Art Deco armchair designed by the renowned Bayonne architect and interior designer Benjamin Gomez (1885–1959), an iconic figure of the Neo-Basque movement and the elegance of the Côte d’Argent during the interwar period.
This piece perfectly illustrates Gomez’s genius—the subtle blend of neoclassical rigor and the graphic modernity of Regionalist Art Deco.
Solid oak frame of superb quality, left with a beautiful light, natural patina. Superb turned work, known as “bead chain” on the armrest supports and the lower section of the front legs—a true visual signature of Benjamin Gomez’s cabinetmaking. Slightly slanted backrest openworked with an X-shaped crossbar motif, lending the piece a great sense of visual lightness.
Seat, double-sided backrest, and armrest pads are upholstered in a textured cream/straw-colored fabric accented with aged brass tacking.
