Pair Of Patinated And Gilded Bronze Candelabers In The Style Of Clodion, Napoleon III Period
A very elegant pair of candelabra in patinated bronze and gilded bronze, based on designs by the famous sculptor Clodion (1738–1814), crafted in the Louis XVI style during the Second Empire, circa 1860–1880.
Each candelabrum is adorned with a putto finely sculpted in bronze with a brown patina, resting on a circular gray marble base adorned with a rich openwork gallery in gilded bronze and four turned legs.
The children, inspired by Clodion’s mythological compositions, each support an elegant lamp arm decorated with vine tendrils, acanthus leaves, and bunches of grapes, ending in a finely chiseled the shape of a finely chiseled antique vase.
The quality of the cast iron, the finesse of the chiseling, and the contrast between the brown patina and the mercury gilding lend this pair a particularly decorative character. The two figures assume different poses, creating a beautiful balance and great liveliness in the composition.
A very fine French piece from the Napoleon III era, inspired by the works of Clodion, whose depictions of putti and Bacchic scenes enjoyed immense success in the 19th century.
