Gouache Depicting A Brig, 19th Century
Gouache on paper depicting a French ship named “Solide.” The inscription, which includes the date 1802, tells us that this is a brig, a sailing vessel consisting of two masts, each carrying three square sails, and featuring a brigantine at the stern. Used for piracy as well as for exploration, trade, and naval battles, the brig was particularly common in the 18th century and during the first half of the 19th century.
