Early 20th Century, Market Scene, Oil On Wood Panel
20th-century oil painting on wooden panel.
A delightful market scene where fruit and vegetable vendors take center stage, their baskets overflowing with leafy greens and bright oranges that immediately draw the eye. The market, long at the heart of Brussels life, is animated by shoppers, rendered anonymous, gathered beneath a muted city skyline of trees and a distant tower.
The bright white parasols are laced by shadows of the tree branches, and the longer you look at the painting the more the details feel personal and true to the Belgian market. The blue apron of the vegetable vendor. The teal legs of the bench holding the baskets of oranges. The bananas hung from the umbrella support. We can even almost make out radishes, leeks, carrots and cabbage, displayed artfully.
The technique is inspired by Impressionism, with short, comma-shaped, textured brushstrokes applied in dense layers to create movement, depth, and atmosphere. Despite the abundance of produce on display, the artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the composition to feel harmonious and cohesive rather than crowded.
