Monumental Sculpture Of Saint George In Repoussé Copper – Signed L. Macon, 1958
An impressive monumental sculpture in repoussé and chiseled copper depicting Saint George, created in 1958 and signed by L. Macon.
Standing 153 cm tall, this work depicts the holy knight in a solemn, upright posture, with both hands resting on the hilt of his sword. The stylized treatment of the forms, the serene expression on the face, and the rich detail of the armor attest to a true mastery of hammered copperwork.
The sculpture rests on a wide, circular base of hammered copper, adorned with a raised inscription reading “SAINT-GEORGES,” which reinforces its monumental character and its likely decorative or liturgical purpose. The warm patina of the copper beautifully highlights the reliefs and gives the sculpture a remarkable presence.
Signed L. Macon and dated 1958, this work is part of the postwar revival of sacred art, in which artists favored clean lines, great expressive power, and noble materials.
