Child Bacchus, Signed Rougelet, Large Patinated Terracotta, 19th Century
Artist: Benoit Rougelet 1834-1894
Large terracotta sculpture with an antique green patina depicting the infant Bacchus surrounded by dancing putti—one of whom is waving a tambourine—during a bacchanal, signed on the base “Rougelet” for Benoit Rougelet, known as Benedict Rougelet (1834–1894). This French sculptor, originally from Tournus, had a career marked by his rebellious nature, which led him to a bohemian lifestyle; despite this, he worked for the leading families of the time, notably the Rothschilds on their private mansion in Paris, as well as on Paris City Hall. He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. He created the statue honoring Jean-Baptiste Greuze in Tournus. Many of his works are housed in museums. This is the case with the original marble sculpture that served as the model for our terracotta piece, which is housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
