Marie-antoinette At The Conciergerie Hst 19th Century
Artist: Heydendal D'après Charles Louis Lucien Muller (1815-1892)
A beautiful signed reproduction by Heydendal (a painter of the mid-19th-century Flemish school) of the painting by Charles Louis Lucien MULLER (from the collections of the Khunstalle Museum in Hamburg), commonly known as “La Bénédicité” The Queen is depicted here in her cell at the Conciergerie. In the foreground are the cobblestones on the floor; in the background are bare walls with visible bars, as well as the guards behind the screen concealing the Queen, and on the side of the scene, playing cards. The wooden furniture, including a straw-seated chair, is minimalist, with water and bread on the table. Marie Antoinette appears in mourning attire, her expression almost meditative and imploring; her eyes are raised to the heavens, and a ray of light floods her face. This portrait of Marie-Antoinette in mourning attire at the Conciergerie, circa 1870, is signed in the lower left corner; it has been restored.
